AI SEO for Local Businesses: What to Fix Before Buying Another Tool

Facebook
Twitter
LinkedIn

“AI SEO” can describe two different activities: using AI tools to help with SEO work, or improving a website’s usefulness in search experiences that include AI-generated answers. It helps to ask which one a provider means before buying a service.

For a local business, start with information a real customer can understand and act on. A new tool cannot correct an unclear offer or outdated contact details on its own.

Start with a clear service page

Choose one service that matters to your business. Read the page and ask whether it explains what is included, who it is for, where you provide it and how someone gets started.

Consider this hypothetical sentence: “We deliver innovative solutions for every customer.” It communicates very little. A more useful example would be: “We design small-business websites with service pages and inquiry forms, with the final scope agreed before the project begins.”

The second version gives a reader something concrete to evaluate. Add details that are true for your own business rather than copying claims from a competitor.

Make useful information easy to find

Give important service pages a clear route from your navigation and relevant articles. If a blog answers a question about website pricing, link to the pricing or service page that helps readers take the next step.

Use descriptive link text. “Compare our website plans” explains more than an isolated “click here.” Keep essential explanations in readable page text, even when you also use images or videos.

Check business details together

Review your public phone number, business name, service coverage and any opening hours you publish. Check your website and genuine business profiles for inconsistent or outdated information.

This is an accuracy exercise. Do not add locations where you do not operate or claim an office you do not have. The information should help someone decide whether your business is relevant to their needs.

Understand what Google actually says

Google’s guidance on AI features and websites says established SEO practices remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode. It does not require special AI markup or a new AI text file. Meeting its requirements does not guarantee that a page will be indexed or shown.

That guidance supports a practical starting point: useful content, accessible pages and clear relationships between your articles and services. It does not establish a method for guaranteeing placement in every AI platform.

Use AI as an assistant, with an editor

AI can help organize an outline, identify unanswered questions or produce an initial draft. Before publishing, a person who knows the business should check every service claim, example and recommendation.

Add something useful from your actual work: a process explanation, a permissioned example or a worksheet. Avoid invented testimonials, results and project stories. A polished article should still be accountable to the business publishing it.

Measure business outcomes

Separate work completed from outcomes observed. An updated title is a completed task. More qualified inquiries is a result that needs measurement. Track relevant search visibility and inquiries over time, while allowing for other changes affecting the business.
