A monthly website plan and a one-time build can both be reasonable choices. The question is what you receive over the period you expect to use the website. A setup price alone does not tell you who handles updates, how edits are priced or what happens when you leave.
For a small business comparing proposals, put the offers on the same timeline before making a decision.
Build a 12-month comparison
Create one column for each proposal. List the setup fee, monthly charge, hosting, software renewals and any separately priced content or integrations. Avoid counting a cost twice when it is already included in a plan.
Use this worksheet: first-year total = setup + 12 monthly payments + required annual fees + agreed optional work. If an offer has a longer minimum term, also calculate the total commitment. This is a comparison method, not a prediction of your final bill.
Compare responsibility as well as price
Ask who updates the site, restores backups and investigates a broken form. Find out whether an edit means changing existing text or also includes new pages, new features and design changes.
For example, a hypothetical shop may need only occasional hours updates. A business launching new services every month may need continuing page work. The same plan will not necessarily suit both.
Ask what happens at renewal or cancellation
Read the written terms for price changes, minimum commitments, access and handover. Clarify domain ownership, content rights and whether the site can move to another provider. Do not assume that monthly billing means you can cancel at any time without further obligations.
Choose the scope you can maintain
Compare the following before approving either model: total commitment, included work, response process, account access and exit arrangements. Mark unclear items as questions rather than filling them with assumptions.
JLG’s published pricing is a useful starting point for a discussion. Confirm the current scope and written terms before selecting a plan. The best comparison gives you a realistic picture of both the website you launch and the work that follows.
