A new website should come with a clear explanation of who controls its essential accounts and materials. Business owners sometimes discover missing access only when they need to renew a domain, change a provider or fix a problem.
Resolve these questions before approving the project. The answers depend on the agreement; this checklist helps you ask for clarity rather than assuming all arrangements are identical.
Start with the domain account
Ask which account holds the domain registration and who receives renewal notices. Confirm the business can identify the responsible person and recover access through its agreed process.
A domain name and website hosting are separate parts of the setup. Paying for a website does not by itself explain who controls either account.
Separate access from ownership
An administrator login allows someone to manage a site, but it does not answer every question about rights to its design, code, photos or written content. Ask what is custom work, what uses third-party software and what is licensed.
If a theme, font or image depends on a provider’s license, find out what happens when that service ends. Ask for the answer in the written project terms.
Request a practical handover
A handover record should identify the domain provider, hosting arrangement, site administrator, important integrations and the people responsible for them. Keep credentials in an appropriate password manager rather than a shared public document.
Also ask how backups are handled and what export or migration support is available. A backup is useful only if someone understands what it contains and how it can be restored.
Review the exit process while relationships are good
Clarify cancellation notice, remaining commitments, transfer assistance and any separate handover charges. Ask whether email or other services share the same hosting arrangement so a website move does not cause an unexpected interruption.
For a simple decision sheet, write ‘business controls,’ ‘provider controls’ or ‘needs clarification’ beside each account and asset. Resolve every unclear entry with the provider. If rights or contract language are uncertain, get advice specific to that agreement rather than relying on a general article.
